Staiger}, year={2016} } J. Staiger In this class, we’ll study how film reviews through the years have influenced film and media studies. We’ll research film reviews in numerous Hollywood trade publications and national newspapers, along with advertising and marketing campaigns, to explore the reception of movies in the 1940s and 1960s. Reception of translated texts has thus far received relatively scant, uneven attention in Translation Studies (TS), even though reception studies theories have been applied in the last decades, first to literary translation and then touching upon other areas and text types. This chapter reports on the development of reception studies within TS, focusing on some of the most significant Reception Academy promotional student video filmed and produced by Waterloo Studios London. It is exactly this emphasis on the move-away from, among others, the reception theory that proves to us to what extent the reception theory application in film studies used to be generally accepted. Ian Christie's recent edited volume on film audiences (2012) is illustrative of this multiscopic endeavour, and it included chapters on audiences from a cognitive film theoretical perspective, next to studies on film programming and audience's behaviour, cultural studies' approaches to film reception, as well as chapters on contemporary audience's engagements with films within a digital 2016-12-12 Biltereyst, Daniël, and Philippe Meers. “Film, Cinema and Reception Studies : Revisiting Research on Audience’s Filmic and Cinematic Experiences.” Reception Studies and Audiovisual Translation, edited by Elena Di Giovanni and Yves Gambier, John Benjamins, 2018, pp. 21–41. More specifically, it reports on a series of experiments carried out at major Italian film festivals (Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia and Torino Film Festival), with the aim to evaluate audience reception of subtitled films and their awareness of what contributes to, or jeopardizes, quality in subtitling. While cultural reception studies focused largely on television texts, film studies appropriated the approach to challenge text-centric theories and began to call for examinations of how film-goers actually respond to film texts.

Alter proposing a theory of reception study, the author demonstrates its application mainly through analyzing the varying responses of audiences to certain films at specific moments in history. Staiger gives special attention to how questions of class, gender, sexual preference, race, and ethnicity enter into film viewers' interpretations. The idea of an audience’s reception in film studies has largely been based on the idea of the spectator. Which is to say, as film studies has routinely been uninterested with the real audience of films, it cannot be expected that they would be interested in the actual reception and interpretation of films. While cultural reception studies focused largely on television texts, film studies appropriated the approach to challenge text-centric theories and began to call for examinations of how film-goers actually respond to film texts.
